The Moapa Valley High School boys wrestling team defeated all five Southern 3A teams in duals on Saturday, Jan. 24.
“We beat Pahrump, which was a bit of a surprise,” said MVHS head coach Ryan Anderson. “They have a good team this year.”
Stetson Houston, Caleb Anderson, Tred Cameron, Ryker Katich, Jayden Staley and Steele Meeks all earned pinfall victories versus the Trojans. Morris Wolfley earned a 19-1 technical fall to tip the scales in the Pirates’ direction.
The Moapa Valley boys also defeated Equipo Academy, 65-6; Virgin Valley, 62-18; Boulder City, 58-23 and The Meadows School, 64-12.
Versus the Mustangs, Wolfley, wrestling at 126 pounds, earned a major decision, 13-1, over Brandon Avila-Ramos. Houston, Anderson, Cameron and Trenton Bunch all earned pinfall victories.
Houston and Anderson both had technical fall victories against Boulder City. Their teammates, Wolfley, Katich, Staley, Meeks, Trystin Wells and Felix Ramirez all had pinfall victories.
Connor Wolfley earned a 15-0 technical fall in just 3:02 against Virgin Valley’s Collin Baeza. Morris Wolfley won via technical fall 27-11 in 5:16 against Ezequiel Plancarte. Anderson won via major decision, and Meeks, Ramirez, Staley and Cameron all earned pinfall victories.
Coach Anderson said Morris Wolfley’s matches were most entertaining given that it’s been a while since he’s wrestled. “[E]ven though he ended up winning them easily on paper, they’re worth highlighting because he is just back from injury and had some ring rust he needed to shake off. He found himself in some battles and was able to persevere. It was fun to watch.”
The Pirates have the GV Christian Quad Duals at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The NIAA Class 3A Southern Regionals are Feb. 6-7 in Mesquite.
