The Virgin Valley High School boys wrestling team had seven Bulldogs qualify for State at the NIAA Class 3A Southern Regionals on Saturday, Feb. 7. The team finished fourth overall, 28 points behind Boulder City in third.

Malachi Jordan was the lone VVHS first-place finisher at 113 pounds. He won both of his matches via pinfall. He was leading Pahrump Valley’s Ethan Rose 11-2 before taking him down with 1:09 remaining and pinned him with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.

Finishing second for the Bulldogs were Ollie Zunga (285 pounds), Micah Woods (138 pounds) and Jaden Flores (215 pounds). All three won two matches to make the championship match in their weight class, and all three fell via pinfall in that final bout.

Agustin Macas, wrestling at 150 pounds, overcame a first-round loss via pinfall to win his next two matches in the consolation bracket and take third. He was tied with Moapa Valley’s Trenton Bunch 6-6 until he reversed a takedown by Bunch and earned a pinned with just two seconds remaining.

Jaxon Potter went 1-2 to finish fourth at 190 pounds. Tucker Boatright (113 pounds) and Collin Baeza (120 pounds) each qualified with fourth-place finishes.

The NIAA State Wrestling Championships start Friday, Feb. 13 at noon in Winnemucca and run through Saturday.
