Virgin Valley High School boys wrestlers Malachi Jordan and Micah Woods placed second and third, respectively, at the NIAA State Wrestling Championships in Winnemucca on Saturday, Feb. 14. Raylynn Woods also placed third for the girls.
Raylynn Woods had technical fall and pinfall victories going into the 110-pound consolation final against Liberty’s Blissany Laborte-Makean. She scored a pinfall victory with 12 seconds remaining in the first period despite her opponent being warned for stalling. Her only loss came via pinfall to second-place finisher River Klein of Douglas.
Jordan, a VVHS senior, got two major decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinals before being pinned by Lowry’s Pete Bengochea in 1:27 of the 113-pound championship bout.
Sophomore Micah Woods showed great perseverance to climb out of the deep, 138-pound consolation bracket after dropping a 12-5 decision in round one. He got a 21-5 technical fall victory in round two and a pinfall victory in round three to qualify for the consolation final. Then, trailing 4-3, he reversed a third-period takedown by Churchill County’s Evan Garcia and pinned him with 44 seconds remaining.
The Virgin Valley boys finished 12th out of 16 3A teams, half a point behind Truckee. The Lady Bulldogs took 21st out of 45 teams and a half-point out of the top-20.
