Virgin Valley High School boys continued excellent early season play by going 3-1 for the week as they defeated visiting Stansbury High School 4-2 on Tuesday, March 10, losing to Mater Academy East 8-2 and, with mostly JVs, defeated Tonopah in a doubleheader on Friday.
The Bulldogs had a tough matchup with Stansbury. The Dawgs jumped on the visitors, scoring three runs early in the bottom of the first inning. Three straight singles off the bats of Trey Hughes, Degan Shaner and Jordan Goodsell and a double from Koby Perry led to three runs for the Dawgs. The visitors responded with a run in the second off Bulldog pitcher Uriah Pereida to cut the Dawgs’ lead to 3-1. The visitors added another run in the fourth inning on two errors by the Bulldogs to cut the lead to 3-2. The Bulldogs added their fourth and final run of the match in the sixth inning. Hughes singled, his third of the game, followed by a double by Shaner to deep center, scoring Hughes, making the score 4-2 going into the top of the seventh inning. Pereida went four innings with Koby Perry in relief to get the win.

The Bulldogs traveled to Las Vegas to take on Mater Academy East in a non-league matchup. The Dawgs could not stay up with the home-town team. Mater scored three runs in the first inning off starter Degan Shaner. The Dawgs rallied in the top of the third inning on a double by Parker Litzenberger, a walk to Hughes and Perry loading the bases. Jordan Goodsell singled, bringing in both runners to cut the lead to 3-2. Litzenberger came into the game in the bottom of the fifth inning and proceeded to give up a homerun, making the score 4-2 for Mater. Mater blew the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on five hits, including two doubles, making the final score 8-2. Goodsell led the Dawgs with two hits. Bulldog pitchers gave up 15 hits to strong-hitting Mater.
The Bulldogs hosted the 1A Tonopah Muckers in a late-scheduled double hitter on Friday. Reserves played most of the two games for the Dawgs. In the first game, the Dawgs scored 13 runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and one run in the third in a mercy-ruled three-inning game. The Muckers shocked the Bulldogs in the second game, scoring three runs before the Dawgs got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with two runs, making the score 3-2 in favor of the visitors. The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead going into the seventh and final inning. The Muckers put up a run in the seventh to make the final score 6-4 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs begin the 3A South-Mountain Division at Pahrump on Wednesday, March 25, and host the Trojans on Friday, March 27.
