On March 6, during the First Friday event, a colorful community piano placed in the pavilion was dedicated by Steve Dudrow, chair of the Public Arts Commission, with a ribbon cutting and the colorful Mesquite showgirls.
Getting a community piano for the art center was a passion of Dudrow’s that finally came true when the Winchester Dondero Center in Las Vegas donated their used piano to the arts commission to be used at the art center. This was truly a community effort, as the Mesquite Opportunities Regional Fund paid to have the piano moved to Mesquite. Dudrow said, “Since the Mesquite City Council had not yet approved it, we had to move it to the STEAM center first. While there, everyone loved it and used it. The Mesquite Public Arts Commission asked and got the piano approved by the city council, and here we are.”

Juan Crolos Arizmend (Fat Dough’s baker) paid to have the piano tuned and played it for the dedication. The piano is now beautifully multicolored thanks to Tyler Roylance’s family and his art students. Everyone is welcome to stop by the art center and play a few of their favorites.
There are now two pianos at the STEAM Center, one procured and donated by Arizmend, and the Reber Family piano procured by Mary Faylan from the museum, continuing the community involvement in the arts.
Thank you Bobbie Green for a wonderful article.
