A dozen fielding errors thwarted the Moapa Valley High School softball team in losses against Carbon and Grand County on Saturday, March 14, but the Lady Pirates had just one error in the field in their 6-2 win over Snake River on Friday, March 13.
Moapa Valley took down the Panthers 6-2 behind the performance of Saphire Holm, who pitched all five innings, allowing just five hits, two walks and two earned runs while striking out seven. Holm was also 2-for-3 with a run driven in.
Meg Evans was 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI and a run scored. Her cousin, Alyssa, was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Claire Holm was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
On Saturday against Grand County, the Pirates committed eight errors in a 10-3 loss. Senior Kylie Neil had a tough day in the circle, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits and three walks over 3.1 innings pitched. She struck out five. She did have a double at the dish, though, and scored a run.
Meg Evans drove in a run, and Alyssa Evans was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Claire Holm had a double in three at-bats.
The Lady Pirates also blanked the Providence Hall Patriots 11-0 on Friday, but stats weren’t available. Against the Carbon Dinos, the Pirates led 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, when Carbon scored thrice, and followed it up with four in the fifth and seven in the sixth. Neil once again struggled in the circle, allowing eight earned runs over two innings pitched, but was 2-for-3 with a run scored. She was the only Pirate with multiple hits in the game.
Claire Holm crushed a solo homer for the Pirates, but the Dino offense got to her a bit, too. She went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks.
“We are still figuring out some kinks, but we continue to improve. We played really tough teams this weekend, and I’m happy to have stuff to learn from and improve,” said Moapa Valley head coach Stacie Stilson.
The Lady Pirates have one more game in their pre-league season at 3:30 p.m. on March 26 against Pine View.
