The Virgin River Casino Bowling Alley was packed with seniors participating in the bowling event for the Mesquite Senior Games on March 14 and 15. Six contestants turned up for the fun-filled doubles tournament on Saturday. The many age divisions ranged from 50 up to 90 and beyond. So, there were many medals to be won.
As with the other Senior Games events, contestants came from locations such as Las Vegas and Utah. A first-time participant from Vegas stated that he heard about the events and was enjoying the bowling tournament so much, he would enter more.
Joanne Brown, who took home both a silver and gold medal, has been attending the Senior Games since 2023. Jeanne Desmond, who also won the silver and gold, stated that this was her first event, “but I will be back for the next tournament.”

Chuck Werner, an avid bowler, was identified as the one participant who over the years has consistently participated in the most senior events. “I just finished competing in a two-day bocce event,” he said, “but I prefer the senior games. It’s been 28 years since I have been in a league. I only bowl four times a year, and two of those times are with the Senior Games.”
Martha Green and Gail Heffer won the gold medals for the doubles category in age group 80-84. In the mixed doubles, Judi Connelly and Mardon Connelly won the gold medals for the same age category.
The singles tournament took place on Sunday, March 15, with 61 bowlers. Phil Davis from Las Vegas made it just in the nick of time to be able to bowl. Davis also competes in the Silver State Senior Games.
Sandy Tudor was on board, making sure everything was running smoothly and selling tickets for the raffle prizes.
The Mesquite Senior Games are an integral part of Mesquite’s overall plan to keep seniors active and have fun doing it. As Shaun Edwards, sports director, stated, “You do not have to be a league bowler to compete in the events.” He added, “We are still in need of those wanting to compete in the track and field competition on April 8.”
