Moapa Valley High School sophomore Ashton Hickman posted a sophomore school record time of 41.12 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles at the Pine View Invitational on Friday, March 20.
“[H]e was in the invite portion…and won the field,” MVHS head coach Shane Hickman informed. “His time was seventh overall, but that in and of itself was actually really good. He did break the MVHS sophomore record with his time on Friday — a record set by Bowen Call in 2009.”
Moapa Valley boasts the top five Southern-division hurdlers in the 110 meters and four of the top six in the 300 meters. Ashton leads the field in the 300 meters and is fifth in the 110 meters.
“Hurdles are definitely one of the most technically demanding events…I’ve got a little more work to do on the girls’ side. We have only two hurdlers in the top five in both hurdle events,” Coach Hickman said.
Ashton was also a part of the eighth-place 4×200-meter relay team, along with juniors Jeremiah Dominguez and Brenden Van Vliet, and freshman Aiden Steen. They ran the 800-meter race in 1:32.56, the fastest time by a 3A team this season.
Van Vliet also posted a personal best time in the 200 meters, finishing 22nd with a time of 22.75 seconds. That ranks third in the 3A this season. Senior Hal Thompson improved on his mile times by running 4:27.75 and finished 15th in the 1,600 meters. He’s the top-ranked 3A athlete in the mile.
For the Lady Pirates, sophomore Madilyn Thompson posted personal bests in both the 800- and 1,600-meter races. She finished 69th in the mile with a time of 5:55.98 and was top 100 in the 800 meters with a time of 2:44.46. Her mile time puts her in the top 10 amongst 3A athletes, right behind classmate Irelynn Lewis.
The Pirate track and field teams visit Arbor View High School at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, before heading to Mojave High School for the Las Vegas Track Classic on Saturday, March 28.
