Virgin Valley High School hosted Chaparral, Cimarron-Memorial and Lincoln County in a weekday track meet. Team scores were not available, but the Bulldog athletes had a good day in most events during the meet. Bulldog sprinter Keegan Stahl continued his dominance of the sprints, edging out Cimarron-Memorial’s Kahlil Flowers in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints with times of 11.34 and 22.61. Stahl led teammates Jack Kelley, Joaquin Ramirez and Jacob Belnap to a first-place finish in the 4×100 meter relay.
Senior Ramirez was edged out in the 400-meter dash. Fellow senior Kyle Griffiths placed fourth in the event. Bulldog Tyson Broderick led the Dawgs’ distance runners, dominating the competition with wins in the 800- and 1,600- meter races. Chris Pantelakis followed behind in second place, while Griffith finished with another fourth-place finish in the 800 meters. Bulldog Corban Lee crossed the finish line right behind Broderick for second place in the 1,600 meters. Bulldog 3,200-meter runner Christopher Gaytan took first place with a 31+ second lead over his closest competitor. Bulldog hurdler Tyrelle Phillips had a third- and fourth-place finish in the 110- and 300-meter hurdle events. The Bulldogs’ 4×200 meter relay team, consisting of Belnap, Kelley, Cyril Cominski and Stahl, finished in first place.
The Bulldogs began the field events with Riley Gossett taking both the shot and discus events. Braylen Dickason finished both events in second place. Leonardo Navarette placed third in the shot and fourth in the discus behind Bulldog Thomas Fink. Bulldog Kyle Dalton won the pole vault with a leap of 10.00 feet. Dalton showed his versatility with a fourth-place finish in the long jump.
On the women’s side, sophomore sprinter Raia Davis placed second in the 100 meter and third in the 200- and 400-meter sprints. Bulldog hurdler Addie Hall placed second in the 100-meter hurdles. Teammate Patricia Slukan finished in fourth place. The roles were reversed in the 300-meter hurdles, with Slukan in second place and Hall in fourth place. Bulldog Kelsey Ellis slipped into third place in the 300 meters. Freshman Makayla Jordan showed she will be a threat in the long-distance races with second-place finishes in the 800- and 1,600-meter races. Virgin Valley easily won the 4×100 meter relay with Mia Bancalari, Davis, Wynn Kelley and Mayzie Tobler leading the way.
In the field events, sophomore Ellie Allen won the discus while Tobler showed her versatility with a second in the shot put. Kelley led a trio of Bulldogs in the high jump, winning the event and followed by Tobler and Sylvia Gleave. Ellis placed second in the pole vault while Kelley placed second in both jumps.
The Bulldogs will travel to Desert Pines on April 2 for a weekday meet.
