Moapa Valley High School sophomore Jenna Dixon and junior Brenden Van Vliet both piled up the personal bests at the Las Vegas Track Classic at Mojave High School on March 28, 2026. Van Vliet finished the 400 meters in 49.55 seconds — a new MVHS record.
“Brenden broke the school record in the 400. That was awesome — and as a junior, no less. The old record was set only three years ago by Ethan Witter,” Moapa Valley head coach Shane Hickman informed. “Ashton Hickman became the first MVHS track athlete ever to compete in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles — typically a collegiate event. He ran a 59.19 and placed second overall in a field of 16 competitors.”
Van Vliet was third in the 400 meters, fourth in the 200-meter dash and 11th in the 100-meter dash. Grant Conger ran a personal best in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:09.59, and Colton Morgan ran a personal best in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:12.78.
As for the girls, Dixon was fourth in the triple jump, eighth in the long jump and 10th in the high jump.
“Jenna had a huge day, triple jumping 34 feet — putting her at number two in the south and the number four triple jumper in the state 3A,” said Hickman. “Jenna also jumped a personal best in the long jump, jumping 14 feet, 8.5 inches. The long jump is a tough field for the south 3A. There are a lot of good long jumpers this year.”
Taylee Bunch high jumped her way into the top spot in the 3A, clearing five feet, 1.25 inches. Ana Freeman still sits on top of the Southern 3A in pole vault, with Sadie Nelson not far behind her in third.
The Pirate track and field teams are at Silverado High School on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. They have the 5th Annual Red Rock Running Invitational at Shadow Ridge High School at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 4.
