Allowing 36 runs over two games, a noticeably young Moapa Valley High School softball roster dropped games to Lincoln County on Tuesday, March 25, and Pine View on Thursday, March 27.
The Lynx put up nine runs in the fourth inning after the Pirates tied it at two in the third. A four-run fifth put the mercy rule in effect for the Lynx, who won, 15-3. Junior pitcher Saphire Holm allowed four earned runs on nine hits and four walks over 4.1 innings pitched. Kylie Neil struggled in relief, allowing nine runs on six walks and five hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Sophomore Meg Evans was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Freshman Presley Adams drove in a run with a hit. Classmate Allison Bell and sophomore Irelynn Carlton each had a hit and a run scored.
The Lady Pirates led 5-2 going into the third against Pine View until the Panthers plated one in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth inning. A nine-run seventh made it a 21-7 final.
Adams was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, and Evans drove in three runs, scored two and was 3-for-4. Claire Holm had a double, and Saphire Holm had a hit and a run. Saphire had a tough day in the circle, allowing 10 earned runs over three innings pitched.
“It’s hard going into league games with so many of our key players on the injured list,” Moapa Valley head coach Stacie Stilson said. “We will do our best, and I’m hopeful I have players that will step up and fill the roles.”
The Pirates (6-5) hope to right the ship in their first league game at Virgin Valley (8-8, 0-2) at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31. On Thursday, the Bulldogs visit MVHS with another 3:30 p.m. start.
