Dedicated athletes showed up at Sun City Recreation Center on Monday, March 23, to prepare for the Southern Nevada Bocce National, which will take place on Saturday, May 3. The Mesquite Desert Stars were there, supervised by Kathy Sheetz. About 20 of them were present, competing in teams, four in all.
Spectators, mainly families of the participants, were dedicated fans of their children, cheering them on. Some parents travel from Moapa and Logandale to have their children be part of the Special Olympics. “My daughter has been with the Special Olympics for three years,” one mother said. “She has been involved with basketball, golf, swimming and bowling.”
The Mesquite Desert Stars, have a strong history of competing in bocce, frequently bringing home medals in local and regional competitions. “Fundraising for our team is an ongoing process,” Sheetz stated. “We need monies for their uniforms and the events that take place during the year. And, of course, there is the annual Christmas celebration, which includes a dinner and gifts. It is that special time where those involved get recognized for all their hard work. It is the work of the many volunteers that make everything possible.”
Bocce practice will continue to take place every Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the Sun City Recreation Center, 1350 Flat Top Mesa Dr., until April 27. Coach Mitch is on hand to work with the teams.
