The Moapa Valley High School baseball team might be struggling in league play, but the Pirates gave the home crowd a 9-8 walkoff victory over Eldorado on Tuesday, March 31. Thatcher Leavitt drove in the winning run, but also drew three walks and scored two runs out of the leadoff spot.
Christopher Kohntopp did a bit of everything, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. He also pitched 4.1 innings of 3-hit ball, allowing three earned runs while striking out three.
Lane Briggs was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored, and Easton Stilson had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Toby Wood laced a double and scored a run.
On Thursday, April 2, Moapa Valley shut out the Sports Leadership and Management Bulls 15-0 in four innings. Collin Hughes allowed just one hit over those four innings, walking three and striking out five. He was also 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Wood had another double and scored a run.
“The 3A south is really tough this year, and we’re missing a few guys that are key pieces right now,” said MVHS head coach Justin Williams. “We’re still hopeful and feel that we can turn this thing around.”
The Pirates (7-10, 0-4) will have a chance to turn it around at The Meadows School (7-10, 0-2) on Monday, April 13 at 5 p.m. The Mustangs visit Moapa Valley on Wednesday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m.
