Just 48 hours after a resounding victory at home against Boulder City, Virgin Valley was dealt a stinging defeat by the same Lady Eagles while on the road.
The Lady Bulldogs were riding high after a solid 10-2 win over Boulder City on Tuesday, April 7 at Bulldog Field. But a two-game sweep was not to be for Virgin Valley, as the Lady Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 6-5 win in the return game, Thursday afternoon at Bravo Field.
The split of the home-and-home series leaves the Lady Bulldogs at 3-3 in 3A Desert League play and 11-9 overall. Boulder City is now 3-1 in league play and 6-9 overall.
In Tuesday’s contest, Virgin Valley scored a run in the bottom of the second inning, when Hayden Owsley tripled to right field and scored on a wild pitch.
Boulder City pushed two runs across in the top of the third, when Rhiley Beck walked and came around to score on a double by Payton Rogers. Ivy Dineen singled home Rogers to put BC up 2-1.
The Lady Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Mady Wright walked, stole second base and scored when Julia Leavitt legged out an inside-the-park home run on a ball hit into the right field corner, giving Virgin Valley a 3-2 lead.
A three-run fifth increased the advantage to 6-2. Leavitt’s routine fly ball was dropped for an error, allowing her to reach third base. After Davie Jo Slack reached on a fielder’s choice, both runners scored on Owsley’s single to left. Owsley later scored on Ava Noel’s sacrifice fly to right.
Virgin Valley tacked on four more runs in the sixth. Ashley Anguiano walked and scored when Wright reached on a fielder’s choice. Wright then came in to score on a throwing error. After Leavitt walked, Slack drove her in with a triple to left-center. A throwing error on the play allowed Slack to score.
Freshman Ryleigh Woods went the first five innings inside the circle for Virgin Valley, scattering four hits, walking four and striking out six batters to earn the win. Freshman Kamzlee Dalton pitched the final two innings, walking one and striking out three of the seven batters faced.
In Thursday’s game, Virgin Valley scored two runs in the top of the fourth to snap a 2-2 tie. Owsley and Noel were each hit by a pitch, with Owsley coming around to score on a throwing error. Mira Vallejo’s ground ball brought in Noel.
After Boulder City scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to get within 4-3, the Lady Bulldogs pushed a run across in the top of the sixth. Slack was hit by a pitch and sacrificed to second by Owsley. Ashlynn Jackson singled to center, bringing home Slack to give Virgin Valley a 5-3 advantage.
The Lady Eagles answered with a three-run sixth to take the lead 6-5. Itzali Skousen walked and Beck singled. Rogers doubled in a run, and the tying run scored on a wild pitch. Lauren Mueller followed with a single to center, scoring the go-ahead run.
Virgin Valley will host winless Democracy Prep Agassi Campus in a league contest Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Bulldog Field. The two teams played Monday afternoon in Las Vegas. The Lady Bulldogs will host 2A Lincoln County in a non-league game Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
