With a pair of shutout wins over the Democracy Prep Agassi Campus Blue Knights on Monday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 7, the Moapa Valley High School softball team improved to .500 in league play to climb into fourth place in the Southern 3A Desert league.
“Our team played great together. Proud of all the players who are stepping up to fill roles on the team,” said MVHS head coach Stacie Stilson.
On Monday in Las Vegas, the Pirates made quick work of DPAC, plating eight runs in the first inning and 10 more in the second to put the mercy rule in effect and limit senior pitcher Kylie Neil’s innings pitched. She allowed just one hit over three innings while striking out eight.
MVHS sophomore Claire Holm was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and junior Shelby Cornwall went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Irelynn Carlton was 2-for-2, scored two runs and drove in two more.
The Lady Pirates had 12 hits, four walks and just one strikeout on the day. It was more of the same the next day in Overton, as Moapa Valley again plated eight in the first inning followed by a seven-run second.
Saphire Holm pitched a perfect game, allowing no hits and no walks while striking out four over three innings. She also went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored at the dish.
Sophomore Meg Evans was 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Alayna Bennett had three hits, including a double. She drove in two runs and scored two herself. Claire Holm drove in two runs with a double and later scored.
The Lady Pirates visit The Meadows School (5-6, 2-3) on Monday, April 13 at 5 p.m. The Mustangs visit Moapa Valley at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
