Moapa Valley’s Muddy River Cloggers recently competed at America on Stage’s Dixie Spectacular Dance Championships. The competition was held March 27-28 at the Dixie Convention Center. Two classes competed under the guidance of instructor Corinne Messer. Each clogger presented four, 32-count “All Around Solos,” highlighting line, show, percussion and traditional dance categories. The Muddy River Cloggers secured an impressive 15 first-place, 17 second-place and two third-place finishes.
Next, the classes performed their team dances. One team competed at the intermediate level, and the other at the advanced level. They were judged on technical skill, showmanship, difficulty and choreography. Each team earned a first-place award, qualifying them to compete at Western Clog Nationals at Lagoon Amusement Park this May. The advanced team also earned a trophy for the most overall wins in their category.

This is the sixth year of competition for Madilyn Marshall, a senior at Moapa Valley High School. “I love going on stage and doing my best for a performance. It’s actually fun to have judges there making sure you’re doing everything right,” she said. Marshall began competing at the
beginner level and has worked her way up to advanced over the years, earning many firsts.
Director Corinne Messer said that preparing the cloggers for competition usually takes a few extra practices, but when they’re ready, it’s very rewarding to watch them shine. “I love that our dancers have the chance to showcase and strengthen their skills, and also to be inspired by
other talented cloggers from across the west.”
Clogging is an American-born style of dance that blends traditional steps from several cultures. Originally performed to country music, clogging is now danced to a wide variety of genres and continues to evolve.
