On April 28, Beaver Dam Fire Rescue responded to a reported incident involving a semi-truck that had veered off the interstate and into a ravine, on I-15 northbound at mile marker 17. Upon arrival, crews found the patient awake and had self-extricated from the semi-truck.
Beaver Dam Fire Rescue teams were kept busy this week, responding to several serious incidents along Interstate 15 through the Virgin River Gorge. Emergency personnel handled three major calls in a short span, ranging from a semi-truck crash to a fatal accident and a fiery rollover involving critical injuries.
On Tuesday morning, April 28, Beaver Dam Fire Rescue, along with the Mesquite Police Department and the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a single-vehicle accident in the northbound lanes near mile marker 17. A semi-truck left the interstate and came to rest in a ravine. When crews arrived, the driver was alert and had already exited the vehicle. The individual was transported by ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital with reported minor injuries.
Just hours earlier, at approximately 8 p.m. on April 27, crews responded to a more critical incident near mile marker 11. A vehicle traveling southbound left the roadway, crossed into the northbound lanes, and came to rest along the roadside. Bystanders located the unresponsive driver and immediately began CPR prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. Despite continued life-saving efforts by Beaver Dam crews, with assistance from Mercy Air, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Law enforcement responded and is continuing to investigate the crash.
Adding to the week’s activity, responders were also called early Wednesday morning, April 29, to a reported rollover crash involving a vehicle fire. Initial reports indicated an occupant trapped between the vehicle and a fence. Upon arrival, crews found the single occupant had already been pulled to safety by bystanders and was outside the burning vehicle. Firefighters quickly put out the flames while paramedics began medical care. Due to the severity of injuries, the patient was airlifted by Mercy Air to St. George Regional Hospital. Law enforcement remained on scene to investigate the incident.
These incidents serve as a reminder of how quickly conditions can change along the Gorge corridor.
