All the action came in the last inning, as the Virgin Valley High School Bulldogs were locked up in a pitchers’ duel between Bulldog Tray Hughes and Clark High School Chargers’ B. Ricci on April 24. The pitchers matched statistics for six straight innings, striking out two opposing players and walking two until the top of the seventh.
The Chargers got on the board in the top of the seventh for one run on a walk and single, putting Chargers on first and third bases. D. Hernandez brought a Charger in from third base, but the second runner was thrown out at home. Hughes dug in and forced a fly out to left field.
Bulldog Brad Perkins lined out to left field for the first out of the bottom half of the inning. Degan Shaner got a single up the middle, setting up first baseman Jordan Goodsell for the big hit. Goodsell drove the ball for a home run, bringing in Shaner to give Hughes the win. The Dawgs had only one hit off Hernandez until last-inning heroics.
The game ended the regular season for the Bulldogs, giving them a 16-7 overall record and a 4-4 3A record, good enough for a fourth-place finish and fourth seed in the upcoming regional playoffs. The Dawgs will host Boulder City at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 7.
