The Virgin Valley High School track and field squad traveled to Boulder City on Friday, May 1, to compete at the Boulder City Invitational. Keegan Stahl led the boys to a second-place finish behind Pahrump Valley, and Wynn Kelley led the girls to a third-place finish behind Pahrump Valley and host Boulder City.
Stahl won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.88 seconds, the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.14 seconds and anchored the 4×200-meter relay to a first-place win with a time of 132.73 seconds. Joaquin Ramirez won the 400-meter run, placed fifth in the 100 meters and led off the 4×400-meter relay to a first-place finish. Tysin Broderick won the 3,200-meter run. Competing for the Bulldogs’ winning relay teams were Jacob Belnap, Jack Kelley, Joaquin Ramirez and Stahl in the 4×200 relay and Ramirez, Elliot Wagner, Thomas Kaestner and Kelley in the 4×400 relay. The 4×100 relay team of Kyle Griffiths, Belnap, Wagner and Kelley placed third in their race.
In the field events, Riley Gossett won shot put with a throw of 45 feet, two inches, and discus with a heave of 129 feet. Leonardo Navarrete and Thomas Fink placed third and fourth, respectively. Kyle Dalton placed third in the pole vault, and Ethan Ofori took second in the triple jump.
On the girls’ side, Wynn Kelley led the Dawgs with three first-place finishes in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Kelley won the high jump by clearing 5.25 feet, the long jump with a 16-foot leap, and the triple jump (32’ 7”). Mayzie Tobler took second in the shot put and third place in the discus. The Lady Dawgs’ relay teams did well, placing third in the 4×100 relay, second in the 4×400 relay and third in the 4×800-meter relay. Raia Davis took third place in the 400-meter run, and freshman McKayla Jordan placed fourth in her 1,600-meter run.
The Bulldog track and field teams will be at Pahrump Valley on May 8 and 9 for the 3A Southern Region finals. The top four finishers will move on to the Nevada State meet at Hugh High School on May 15 and 16.
