Virgin Valley traveled to Reno as the fourth seed on Thursday and Friday for the Nevada 3A State Baseball Tournament.
The Dawgs faced Northern Division champion Elko on Thursday, May 14. The Dawgs fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. They rallied in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Justin Goodsell got the rally going with a single to left field. Koby Perry followed with a double to left field to move Goodsell to third base. Uria Pereida singled to right field, driving in courtesy runner J. Rolfe and Perry to tie the game 2-2 with no outs. Degan Shaner got the Dawgs up 3-2 on a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Pereida for the lead.
Two errors by the Dawgs got the Indians back on top 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Elko added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 5-3 win over the Bulldogs. The Dawgs only managed three hits in the game. Pereida led the team with two runs batted in. The loss moved the Dawgs to the losers’ bracket against Wooster High School on Friday morning.
Wooster got aboard in the second inning, taking advantage of an error and a walk to lead 1-0. The Colts increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third inning. Virgin Valley got its only run from a rally at the top of the fourth inning. Tray Hughes doubled to start the inning, with Parker Litzenberger moving Hughes to third. Goodsell followed with a line drive to right, scoring Hughes. Litzenberger took a long lead but was picked off first base for the first out of the inning. The rally was shut down by the Colts’ pitcher, who struck out the next two batters to end the inning. The Colts added the last run of the game at the top of the fifth inning, making the score 4-1 Colts.
The Dawgs managed five hits in the game, two each from Hughes and Litzenberger. The loss gave the Dawgs a 16-11 record for the season.
