The Mesquite Police Department and Mesquite Animal Control have spent the past several months responding to complaints involving a local residence reportedly housing a large number of dogs.

According to a media release issued May 18, officers investigated multiple complaints and determined the dog owner, identified as Giustino Laudando, was in violation of Mesquite City animal ordinances. Authorities said several citations were issued, and after failing to comply, Laudando was arrested on two separate occasions on warrants connected to those violations.

Earlier this year, Laudando was evicted from the residence and reportedly told officials he planned to leave Nevada with the animals. However, officers later discovered he remained in the area on BLM property outside Mesquite city limits.

On May 15, Mesquite Police and Animal Control officers contacted Laudando again after he returned to the city. During that interaction, authorities cited him for additional violations related to animal welfare and city code compliance.

Officials reported that officers recovered 77 dogs from an RV during the investigation. Thirty more were found hidden away.

Several of the animals required significant medical attention, and some were found to be pregnant. Since the recovery effort began, one dog has delivered four puppies.

The Mesquite Police Animal Shelter is currently caring for a large number of rescued animals in need of extensive medical treatment and daily care. While the shelter has adequate supplies, including food, the unexpected influx of animals has created a significant financial burden as staff work to provide proper care and treatment.

Individuals wishing to make monetary donations are encouraged to contact the records division at the Mesquite Police Department to ensure donations are properly processed and directed to the animal shelter. A member of the records division will also be available at the shelter to assist with donations.

Officials noted that every donation can make a meaningful difference in helping care for the rescued animals.

The Mesquite Police Department and Animal Control Division stated,  “Thank you for the overwhelming support that has been shown to our animal shelter. We are well stocked with supplies and food. If you were thinking about buying something for our animals, please consider a monetary donation instead, as the cost to medicate and prepare these dogs for adoptions will continue to add up.”

Mesquite Police and Animal Control stated they remain committed to protecting the safety and well-being of animals within the community.
