The May art competition for the Virgin Valley Artists Association was themed “Colors of Springtime” and made a vivid splash along the walls of the gallery for all the attendees to enjoy at the competition awards ceremony, Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The Best of Show Award went to Floyd Johnson for his acrylic painting, “Colors after a Spring Rain.” The canvas was so realistic that it looked like it was wet.
Shawn Rice of Bauman Wealth Advisors, the event’s May sponsor, was there to hand out the award envelopes. This month’s group of winners seemed sparse because two artists each took home three or more awards.
Christine Picior’s mixed media and vividly colored “Flower Talk” won the Sponsor’s Choice award, the People’s Choice award and the first-place award in the Brushed Art Category.
Picior said, “I am taking an online class in a new technique; I guess it worked well for me.”

Janna Worwood took second place in the Brushed Art category with her acrylic, “Springtime Fantasy.” She captured the Drawing and Sketch category, taking first place for “Allie Jean’s Flowers,” second place for “Spring Harvest” and honorable mention for “Beau’s Blue Sky.”
Two honorable mentions were left in the Brushed Art Category, going to Gina Tooley and Whiterose Whitefeather.
In the Photography and Digital Art category, first place went to Shirley Smith for “Tender is the Resistance.” Second place went to Randy Bauman for his unique “Eight Exposures of Spring.” Honorable mentions went to Shirley Smith and Randy Bauman.
In the Dimensional Art and Earths Elements Category, first place went to Wendy Douglas for her fabric art depicting “New Life” in the desert. Second place went to Whiterose Whitefeather for “Spring Blossoms.” Honorable mentions went to Elena Ahrens and Paulette Schermehorn
The June awards celebration will be special as next month’s sponsor will be the Daughters of the American Revolution, celebrating the 250th birthday of the nation.
The June awards will also kick off a new corner in the art gallery, featuring an artist-donated piece to be raffled off at the monthly receptions. The proceeds from the raffle will support scholarships and educational programs in the community.
