Virgin Valley High School is celebrating one of its most respected educators and coaches after longtime Bulldog mentor Leon Durbin was awarded a Lifetime Pass by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), recognizing more than three decades of dedication to Nevada high school athletics and education.

The honor was recently announced by Virgin Valley High School, which praised Durbin for the lasting impact he has made on generations of students, athletes and families throughout the community. For more than 30 years, Durbin dedicated himself to the classrooms, wrestling mats and athletic fields of Virgin Valley High School. Known for his leadership, work ethic and commitment to student success, he helped shape not only successful athletic programs but also the character and values of countless young people who passed through the school’s doors.

Among his many accomplishments, Durbin was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 2011, in recognition of his outstanding coaching career and contributions to the sport. As head wrestling coach, he led the Bulldogs to four consecutive state team championships, establishing one of the most successful eras in the program’s history. In addition to wrestling, Durbin also coached cross-country, mentoring student-athletes across multiple sports and helping them develop discipline, perseverance and a strong work ethic.

School officials described the recognition as a rare and well-deserved honor, highlighting Durbin’s years of loyalty, mentorship and service to the Virgin Valley community. The NIAA Lifetime Pass is awarded to individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to high school athletics in Nevada. The honor recognizes exceptional service to student-athletes and interscholastic programs across the state.

Durbin said the recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the appreciation of those he has worked alongside throughout his career. “Of course, it makes me feel great to know people appreciate my efforts,” Durbin said. “I always felt like I should do my best, just like I’d tell my students and athletes. Thank you.”

The humble response reflects the approach that has defined Durbin’s career. Throughout his decades in education and athletics, he earned the respect of fellow coaches, colleagues, students and community members through his dedication to teaching and mentoring young people. His influence extended far beyond wins and losses, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to impact generations of Bulldogs.
