he W. Mack Lyon Middle School National Junior Beta Club held its Induction Ceremony for 2009-2010 club members on Friday, April 24. Proud parents gathered in the Mack Lyon Library to celebrate this step in the children's lives.

Beta Club Advisor Crystal Blackwell welcomed parents and students to the induction. "These young adults are the leaders of tomorrow," she stated. Blackwell presented a slideshow with photographs of the new Beta members, photos as babies and current photos. The slideshow was centered around the question, "Who will you be when you grow up?"

Mack Lyon School Principal Rod Adams then addressed students, including his own daughter Natalie, with a congratulations and short story on what it means to be provide "service". Delgadillo proceeded to explain to students that the pencil, while simple and never changing much, has the power to write so many things. "Sure it needs sharpening at times, but it doesn't have to be bigger and better than anything to make the difference," Delgadillo said. "What will the pencil write about you?"

New Beta President Spencer Baker addressed parents and fellow students and talked a bit about the purpose of the Beta Club. "We are being trained to become future leaders," he explained.

Baker talked about events, projects and meetings that the group had to look forward to in the coming year.

The students lit a candle then repeating a pledge led by outgoing Beta Club members. Each student received a certificate and treat then enjoyed refreshments with their family members and friends.

Following the ceremonies outgoing President Veda Ortiz expressed that she was sad her year was ending, "We had a lot of fun" she said. Outgoing Vice President Holly Rust reminisced about her favorite service project stating, "I felt ecstatic to make care packages for soldiers," she stated.
