Summer Activities Coming Up For All Ages

The summer fun began as the community public pools opened over the holiday weekend. Though temperatures on Saturday were relatively cool, the swimming pools in Overton and Logandale opened their gates and a few people showed up to swim. Open swim hours at the pools this summer will be Monday – Saturday from noon to 4:00 pm in Overton and from 1:30 to 5:30 pm in Logandale.

To add variety and fun to the water fun, the Splash Pad in Moapa has been open for use for several weeks now. The Splash Pad is in operation between 8 am and 9 pm daily.

A swimmer takes a cool dive at the Overton Pool on Saturday afternoon. The water fun began over the Memorial Day weekend as the area pools opened for swimmers.
The opening of the pools marks the beginning of summer aquatics activities. Registration for summer programs is going on now at the Parks and Rec office at the Logandale Fairgrounds.

Swim lessons will be held at both pools. The Overton Pool will offer evening swim lessons on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. At Logandale Pool, swim lessons will be held in the morning. “We aren’t eliminating any programs,” said Parks and Rec Supervisor John Stastny said of the new schedule. “Everything is still being offered, we are just adjusting the schedules and looking for ways to accommodate more people.”

Kids played at the splash pad at the Moapa Park last week. The splash pad has been opened for a few weeks now and will be open daily from 8 am to 9 pm through the summer. Dive lessons will be offered at the Logandale Pool where basic diving skills and diving board use will be taught four days per week.

Swim team programs are again being offered for the more seasoned swimmers. A Synchronized Swim Team, for ages 6-15, will be formed and will practice three times per week throughout the summer. A competitive swim team will also be meeting for practices three times per week. The team will compete in swim meets around the region.

Water exercise programs for adults will also be offered with classes in deep water and high endurance exercise.

In addition to aquatics, there is a wide variety of Parks and Rec programs available for all ages during this summer. The Summer Recreation Program will begin on June 14. This program will be offered on Monday and Wednesday for kids up to 12 years old. The program will consist of arts & crafts, board games, outdoor and indoor games, swimming and much more.

For the older segment of kids ages 9-12, Sports Camp will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program will spend two weeks of skills per sport, in the following sports Basketball, Football, Baseball/Softball, Volleyball, and Pickle-ball.

“Last year we tried taking a day-care approach to Summer Rec,” said Stastny. “But we heard back from people that they didn’t really need a babysitter. They just wanted a place for the kids to go a couple of days a week and have fun. So we are keeping more of a recreation focus this year.”

The Moapa Rec Center will be offering a long line-up of classes and workshops during the summer. These include a golf club, guitar classes, science camp, knitting and crocheting classes, dance classes, indoor tennis, foods classes, craft camps and scrapbooking sessions. Classes start June 14 and registration is going on now at the Moapa Recreation Center.

For would-be athletes in the community, the summer programs offer several community sports leagues.

An Adult 3-on-3 Basketball league will begin on June 22. Round Robin play will go on every Tuesday and Thursday evening through July 22.

Adult Men’s and Women’s Softball Leagues will get underway in the first week of July. The Women will play on Tuesday evenings and the Men will play on Thursday evenings both at 6:00 p.m.

A Youth Soccer League will start playing later in the summer. Beginning August 28, the season will run into the Fall. League play will occur on Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm and Saturday mornings 8-11 am.

Registration for all of these summer activities will continue through June 18. For more information call Parks and Rec at 398-7480 or stop by the office at the Logandale Fairgrounds.
