The morning began with the one and only steer of the day which was followed by goats. The animals were shown by class, first with the Senior, then Intermediate and lastly Junior Class. Showing goats there was one in the Senior Class, 5 Intermediate and 3 Junior. Barnes looked over the animals but more specifically watched the kids and gave constructive feedback on their showmanship skills.
After providing feedback the kids were placed and given ribbons for their efforts. Barnes expressed the importance of good presence and facial expression. “Always maintain eye contact with the judges,” he said. The Lambs were next with two in the Senior Class, 8 Intermediate and 11 in the Junior Class. In the Swine category there were two in the Senior Class, 27 in the Intermediate which were shown in two heats and 9 in the Junior Class. The swine were certainly a much more lively bunch. As the judge repeatedly pointed out that you must slow down in order to slow your pig down he referred to himself as the “Pig Whisperer” which gave the kids a good chuckle. Barnes expressed the importance of showmanship not only in the ring but in life as a whole. “You have an advantage, this prepares you for life skills, you will need to exhibit showmanship everyday in real life,” he said. Towards the end of the clinic ribbons were given to weight of gain winners. Adaven Scronce took the 1st place ribbon for her steer. In the Lamb category Alex Jones took 1st, Chaz Cornwall took 2nd and Anthony Cornwall took 3rd. In the goat category Rebekah Caldwell took 1st as Calvin O’Toole and Carley Alexander tied for 2nd.
