| to be excited about,” Green said. “It is an honor to have you here to show you what we are up to.”
The Educational Farm Foundation is a group of local volunteers with the common goal of preserving and enriching the MVHS Ag Farm as well as general agricultural practices in the community. The foundation seeks ways to expand the functions of the farm to make it a more valuable community resource by drawing visitors from other areas to the farm. “This is the last remaining school owned agricultural farm in the state of Nevada,” Green said. “There is nothing else like it. We want to keep it that way.” After lunch, MVHS Ag Farm manager, Kevin O’Toole guided the group on a tour of the farm. The tour included stops at the desert demonstration garden, a newly built straw bale classroom and school gardens. Inside of a large greenhouse, the group was faced with a whole network of crops being produced by hydroponics. “A lot of the produce that we are growing here are being sold here locally,” O’Toole said. “Sugar’s Restaurant buys a lot of our produce to use in its salads.” Funds raised from sale of produce, hay and livestock are put into a fund to offset the farm’s operating expenses, O’Toole explained. “There is just magic going on all around you here,” Green concluded. “It is an exciting place.” |
