Mesquite Works Coming To Moapa Valley

Help is on the way for local residents who are looking for a new job in early 2020. Volunteers from the Mesquite Works organization will be at the CSN offices on the campus of Moapa Valley High School on January 14 from 10 am until 1 pm to offer help with writing resumes or other basic job hunting assistance.

Mesquite Works is a non-profit community organization that offers free assistance to job seekers and has an office in Mesquite.

“We have seen a lot of folks from Moapa Valley come in to our Mesquite office to get help,” explained Mesquite Works Executive Board member Burton Weast. “Because of that, we thought it good to actually go to Moapa Valley and be more available to folks down there so they don’t have to drive all the way to Mesquite for help.”

Weast said that the Mesquite Works organization has always considered the residents of Moapa Valley as part of its service territory. The organization has two local residents on its board including MVHS principal Hal Mortensen and Progress owner/editor Vernon Robison.

Since its formation in 2015, Mesquite Works has organized over a dozen Job Fairs and directly assisted job seekers in their Mesquite office.

“Our free services have assisted over 500 people in their search for new or better jobs,” said Mesquite Works Board Chairman and Mesquite City Councilman George Gault.

Job seekers who come to Mesquite Works will get help writing a resume, and information on available jobs in the region.

In addition, Mesquite Works sponsors career days for area high schools which allow students to see careers that are available in our region.

Mesquite Works was founded with the assistance of Mesquite Regional Economic Development (MRED), an organization that seeks new companies to locate in the Moapa Valley and Mesquite region. Gault noted that “One of the first things companies look for is a skilled workforce before making a decision on where to locate.”

Mesquite Works assists in that effort by helping prospective job seekers with basic skills needed for a good interview.

Weast expressed appreciation to College of Southern Nevada for the use of their Moapa Valley branch office located in the rear parking lot adjacent to Moapa Valley High School at 2400 N. St. Joseph Street in Logandale.

“Mesquite Works has a long history of working closely with CSN,” Weast said. “They have had a representative on our board since the start. We appreciate being able to use their facility to benefit the community in this way.”

The assistance offered by Mesquite Works volunteers is free of charge. More information is available at www.mesquiteworks.org.
