OBITUARY:

Arland Whipple

Arland Heber Whipple, age 58, died Monday, August 18, 2008 at his home in Logandale, Nevada after a long battle with Melanoma Cancer. He was born February 26, 1950 in St. George, Utah to Wilford and Emma Thompson Whipple. On September 23, 1972 he married his sweetheart Yvonne Callahan in the St. George LDS Temple.

Arland grew up in Logandale on a dairy farm. The youngest of six children, he learned to work hard at a young age, especially after the premature death of his father when Arland was only nine years old. Arland was still able to be involved in many school activities. He was recognized as All State Lineman in football, and won many state and National competitions in FFA, where he excelled in Dairy judging. He found time to earn his Eagle Scout Award and to serve as a volunteer firefighter. After graduating from MVHS, he served an LDS mission in Western Australia, using his leadership abilities to further the work.

He attended Dixie College, graduated from mortuary school in San Francisco and finally earned his Bachelor’s Degree from UNLV while finishing his apprenticeship at Bunker’s Mortuary. In 1978, he went to work for Nevada Power and moved his small family back to Logandale. Always faithful in the LDS Church, he served as Elder’s Quorum President, as a membership clerk, Cubmaster and he will be remembered best as a Gospel Doctrine teacher. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and loyal, honest friend.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne of Logandale; two sons and two daughters: Sterling (Young Shil) of Helotes, TX; Kathryn Whipple of St. Helens, OR; Angela of Logandale; Kevin (Raydean) of St. George, UT; six grandchildren; one brother and three sisters: Elayne (Jerry) Goddard of Las Vegas, NV; Emma Lou (Stewart) Lewis of Overton, NV; George (Patricia) of Lehi, UT; Myrna Whipple of Portland, OR; sister in law, Susan Whipple of Logandale, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alma.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Logandale LDS 1st Ward Chapel. Visitation will be Friday, August 22, 2008 from 6 – 8 p.m. and again from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will be in the Logandale Cemetery under the direction of Moapa Valley Mortuary, 702 398-3600.
