The new Senior Center located next to Maverik convenience store in Overton, is scheduled to open in January 2009. As the building begins to take shape, the question for many in the community seems to be, what will happen to the current Senior Center building?

Moapa Valley Town Advisory Board Member, Rik Eide recently posed this question at a town board meeting. After asking this question, Eide reportedly offered an answer. He felt it would be in the best interest of the community if the seniors leased the current building for a nominal amount to the Cappalappa Family Resource Center.

New Senior Center is under construction and is scheduled for completion early next year. This leads some in the community to ask what will happen to the old facility.
The Cappalappa Family Resource Center is a locally operated non-profit organization providing services such as; a food bank, school supplies, clothing, counseling, educational services and more to Moapa Valley residents in need. The center is located at 261 S Jones in Overton.

“This would be a great opportunity for the seniors to give back to the same community that supported them in the planning and eventual building of the six million dollar-plus, structure they will soon be residing in,” said Eide in an interview.

Roxanne LaBeau, director of Cappalappa said; “Although Cappalappa enjoys the year round and day to day support of our valley, it certainly took us by surprise at this recent outpouring of good will. Regardless of outcome, our focus is and always has been to support any and all needs of the citizens. An entity like Cappalappa is not confined by the size of the building but grows and expands with each person we help.”

Director of the Senior Center, Ruth Callwell, said that the Senior Center Board of Directors will be meeting this week to discuss their options. Callwell also stated that nothing has been decided as of yet.
