A Heritage Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the monument on Riverside Rd where the very first home was built in Virgin Valley.
This event will commemorate the 146th anniversary of the arrival of settlers in Virgin Valley in January of 1877. These settlers dedicated the land that is now Bunkerville, started clearing the fields and began digging an irrigation canal that would bring river water to the fields for spring planting.
The Heritage Day program will start at 9:00 am with a flagraising ceremony and songs. Vinnie Leavitt, author of “Mesquite Flats, a History of Virgin Valley,” will be the guest speaker at the event.
Refreshments will be served following the program. Everyone is invited to attend and learn about the community’s history.
Dutch oven cobbler and ice cream will be served on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 3:30 pm for a fundraiser for the ongoing restoration of the historic Relief Society building in Mesquite. The event will be held at the plaza between the Mesquite Arts Center and the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum. A $5 donation is suggested for the cobbler.
A raffle will be held for several prize items. These include a handmade youth-size quilt, a basket of treats from Danielle’s Chocolates, and gift cards from Juniper Outpost and Ace Hardware. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or $20 for 5 tickets and can be purchased at the Heritage Museum on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday this week.
Raffle winners will be drawn and announced on Friday, Jan. 20 and winners will be contacted that day.
A silent auction will also be held. Items being auctioned include a handmade cedar chest donated by Vay Mickelson. The starting bid is $50.00.
The event is sponsored by the Virgin Valley Historical Society – they would like to thank the businesses that have donated gift cards and other items. The event is being held in conjunction with the Virgin Valley Art Association awards reception being held from from 4 to 6 pm.
The first Service Project on the historic Relief Society building will be held on Saturday, January 21 from 8am to noon. Anyone interested in helping out to restore the building should bring tools , gloves, possibly a stepladder, and be dressed to work for 1 or 2 hours or whatever time they are able to volunteer. All help will be appreciated.

MVPAC will host the Education Department of the Utah Shakespeare Festival: Othello.
Tickets are available at the door, $10/adults and $8/seniors and students and $35 family.
