Regarding Military Recruiting
To the Editor:
To borrow a line from Dr. Moses: No one asked me… but I think it’s Keith Grimes that has it wrong not Dr. Moses. In fact, Mr. Grime’s letter is offensive to me because of the accusation that America fights wars of aggression.

Let’s look at some facts. Every war we’ve fought, from the Vietnam War to the present, has been defensive wars. Kennedy sent us into Vietnam to turn back Soviet aggression. We didn’t start it, the USSR did. Almost all the wars since have been in response to aggression or threats to US security, (the exceptions are Somalia and Bosnia, and even they were not because of corporate interests. You’ll have to ask Mr. Clinton what he was thinking there.) Mr. Grimes claims that there would be no need to recruit if we were attacked by a foreign power. Well the military did have to recruit in WWII. I think we were attacked by a foreign power then, right? More currently, both the Afghani and Iraq wars were the result of an attack on our nation. Of course, too many people choose to overlook that fact. And our military did see volunteers by the boatload. Even with the volunteers, just as in WWII, we need to recruit on our high school campuses. Besides the young are particularly suited for military service, it is not a job for older adults.

As for his defense of the ACLU, well, that organization defends only liberal causes, never conservative, so they have no credibility at all with me. The ACLU is attacking the practice of recruiting on our campuses only because they hate the military and everything that makes this nation strong.

Mr. Grimes also made the accusation that wars are fought for corporate interests. Well those interests give Americans jobs. They also give us gas in our cars, food on our table, big screen televisions, and drugs that save our lives. Corporate interests bring those things to us to make a profit. If there were no profits, we wouldn’t have these things. We’d all be poor farmers living hand to mouth. (Ask the Europeans why their socialist economy is stalled and the Chinese about their new aggressive capitalist economy.) Wars are not good for profits, so that accusation is just silly.

Amazing Voter Turnout
To the Editor:
Way to go Moapa Valley! The huge local voter turnout was truly amazing.

We had hundreds of voters arrive at their specified locations on Saturday, ready to fulfill their civic duty. The State Republican party was only expecting about 150 people from our local precincts to attend.

More than 600 participated in the Republican caucus on Saturday, and the coordinators were completely overwhelmed by the response.

So many people were so patient as they were sent from one precinct location to another, trying to find their place to vote, and a room large enough to hold their precinct. So many could have just gone home, but they wanted to be a part of selecting our next president. The amount of dedication to civic responsibility in our Valley was exciting to be a part of. Thank you everyone who attended the caucuses on Saturday, it was truly remarkable.

Republican Caucus a Logistical Challenge
To the Editor:
I was overwhelmed. In more than one way.

On the positive side, I was overwhelmed by the outstanding turnout of people. I had been told to expect around 100 to 150 people. More than 600 showed up. Truly amazing, and I thank you all for attending.

On the negative side, I was overwhelmed by not being prepared for so many people. I volunteered to be the site coordinator on January 15, and was asked to pick up the materials on the evening of January 18. The State Party was unable to provide me with any precinct maps, so I downloaded some from the county website. These maps were totally inadequate. This created delays in finding out where to go. I apologize.

Many came forward and helped to get, and keep the ball rolling. They did an outstanding job, and I thank them. To the people who volunteered to be precinct chairs, thank you. To the people at Moapa Valley High School who opened bigger and bigger rooms as we needed them, thank you.

The county convention is next month, and I am trying to ensure that all selected as delegates and alternates are recognized, and that they enjoy the experience. Let me say, ahead of time, that should any problems occur in a person being recognized, I apologize.

Again, thank you for attending and for being involved.

The Whole Big Game Story
To the Editor:
This letter is in reference to Mr. Larry Wood’s letter (January 9: Disappointed in Big Game Photos). I love animals and love to take photos of them. I do not hunt but I do think we should know the whole story.

Number one: Africa is a very rich nation, it is the people who are poor. The government there has plenty of money. Yet we still send our dollars there. Number two: the meat does not go to waste, the villagers get all the meat from the game they kill and al share it, soyou see it helps feed the villagers and the poor.

Number three: the cost of such a hunt is very costly and helps to keep people employed. I admit they make a bundle of money for these hunts but it helps everyone there.

Number four: if you think this is terrible what about our own people who trophy hunt Elk, deer, puma and allt he rest of the game we have. There are a lot of avid hunters right here who hunt a lot, keep the meat and some donate it to the seniors anad other places. So you see, it is not terrible, it is reality and this has been going on for hundreds of years.

Now we know the rest of the story. Dan Hopkins helped support this country buy spending his hard earned money there for something he wanted to do; and he helped Africa’s economy while doing it. I hope that you see the whole story now, which, I think, the paper should have told to start with.

Apology To Community
To the Editor:
I am deeply sorry about the past events. I was on of the four that vandalized the Best Western and robbed the Chilly Willy ice cream truck. I can’t begin to say how sorry I am. I mainly apologize to the Best Western and Chilly Willy for all the hardship it caused. Also to the court for also the trouble it caused. Also to anyone that this might affect. And also, to anyone who might have worried about me through these past few weeks, I know what I did was wrong and I would do anything to take it back.
