MVHS Students Inducted Into National Honor Society

Megan Soderquist receives her official certificate of induction into the National Honor Society from Principal Grant Hanevold as Adviser Joyce Olson looks on.

The National Honor Society at MVHS held it’s annual Induction Ceremony on Monday, January 28 in the Ron Dalley Theater. The Induction Ceremony is an annual opportunity for students who have been invited to become part of the NHS to be officially accepted into the organization. Before these students actually walk on stage and receive their induction certificate, however, they have a rigorous application process to complete.

The students inducted last Monday received a letter in early January inviting them to become part of NHS. These letters were sent to high achieving students who attained good grades. The students were then required to complete a resume, attain letters of recommendation, and write an essay. The essay was supposed to demonstrate to those reviewing the applications that a student exhibits Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service, the standards by which NHS measures its members.

The new inductees were welcomed to NHS by President Holly Garlick.

A candle lighting ceremony followed. Each of the NHS officers lit a candle that symbolized one of the four attributes that the Society looks for in their inductees and members.

All of the inductees and members of NHS then stood and recited the Society pledge. The pledge embodies the Society’s dedication to high standards. “I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Honor Society…I will be loyal to my school; and will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.”

Each of the new inductees were then called to the stand to receive their certificate of membership from Adviser Joyce Olson and Principal Grant Hanevold. The special speaker at this year’s induction was Dr. Larry Moses. Moses entertained the students throughout his speech with wisdom like, “If you have to borrow money, borrow from a pessimist, he doesn’t expect to get it back anyway.”

Moses also gave valuable advice on life. “Success should not be measured by dollar bills. When I was a kid we measured success by crayons. He or she with the most crayons was the best,” he said.

Moses’ most heartfelt comments encouraged students to do their best in life, regardless of what their best was. “It took me a while to realize that I was never going to be just like my older brother. I wasn’t him, I was me,” he said. “Make sure you find out who you are.”

After Moses’ comments President Holly Garlick stood again to welcome the newest members of the National Honor Society into the El Pirata Chapter. “We are excited that you are now a part of this great organization,” she said.

The local Pirata Chapter of the NHS has participated in many service activities throughout our community. Each year the NHS organizes two to three blood drives in cooperation with United Blood Service. NHS is always an active participant in the annual Relay for Life, and the organization provides volunteer workers for the Senior Center on a regular basis.
