OBITUARY

Blaine Allan

Blaine Weight Allan, 96 years old, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2008 in his home in Cedar City, Utah of causes incident to age. He was born on January 27, 1912 in Springville, Utah, to Wilbur Bird and DeEstie Weight Allan. He married his sweetheart, Eva Harmer, on November 28, 1934, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Blaine graduated from Salem High School and went on to Brigham Young University where he played on the BYU Football team and also was on the BYU wrestling team. He graduated from BYU in June, 1934. He later received his Masters of Education from BYU in 1958. He taught school in Salem, Heber City, and Payson, Utah before moving to Logandale, Nevada to start a dairy farm. He decided after a few years, that education was a better way of life for him and moved his family to Mesquite, Nevada in 1957, where he became the Elementary School Principal and the Sixth Grade teacher. In 1961, Blaine became the principal of the Virgin Valley High School until his retirement in 1975.

Blaine was a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints his entire life and his church service included Counselor in the Bishopric in Logandale, Bishop in Mesquite, and Counselor in the Moapa Stake Presidency for many years. After release from the Stake Presidency, he served on the Stake High Council until he and Eva were called to serve as missionaries in the Bolivia LaPaz Mission in 1976. Before and after their mission, they also served as Temple Ordinance workers in the St. George, Utah Temple. They served there until they accepted another mission call in 1980 to Nauvoo, Illinois. On their return, they went back to the Temple and served there until 1991. During this time, Blaine was called as the Moapa Stake Patriarch and when they moved to Cedar City, he also served as the Cedar City, Utah Stake Patriarch.

Blaine loved the Boy Scouts of America program, and was involved in Scouting his entire life. He influenced many, many young men to complete their path to Eagle Scout. He was honored by the BSA in January, 1962 with the Silver Beaver Award, one of Scouting’s highest awards. He also was a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers and served as their President from 1997-1999. Blaine carried on the traditions of his father in blacksmithing and wheelwright and wainwright work for many years. He was a man of many talents and especially loved the outdoors. He loved fishing, flowers, good reading material, funny stories and articles, and he loved the family cabin at Navajo Lake on Cedar Mountain. Most of all he loved and enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a rare sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest and was always busy in his shop until just the past six months when his health declined.

He is survived by his children: Loraine (Dick) Starr of Mesa, AZ; Dennis (Kara Lynne) Allan of Cedar City (who have been taking care of him); Judith, (Dan) Frehner of Pioche, NV; Norma (Brent) Chadwick of Henderson, NV; Robert (Janet) Allan; and Joseph (Karen) Allan of Salem, OR: 39 grandchildren; 121 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by he sweetheart, Eva, and his parents, all of his siblings, two daughters, Dee and Jeanette (Dave) Andersen, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 10:00 AM at the Rock Church in Cedar City, UT. Friends and family may call or visit Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday morning from 8:00-9:15 AM. Both viewings will be at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 N 300 W) in Cedar City.

A graveside service will be Saturday at 3:30 PM in the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, UT under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary (435) 586-4040.
