On Incorporation
To the Editor:
Do we really need another layer of government? Will incorporation solve all of our problems? Daniel Pray was quoted in the Progress (Apr. 2: MV Chamber of Commerce Hears Incorporation Report)) and was correct in stating that the State Consolidated Sales Tax provides some funding for incorporated cities, based on a plethora of variables. He further indicates that “There are many more revenue sources that would be available to an independent city.” And that is correct. Most incorporated cities charge residents a franchise tax on things like phone service, garbage fees, television subscriptions, water charges, animal licencing, sewer, power and more.

Mr. Pray contacted North Las Vegas Police Department to get an idea of the cost of providing public safety services for the new city. Whoever provided the guesstimate may need to do more study. Five full time public safety officers are required to provide one single patrol car for one 24 hour period. That number takes into account vacation, regular days off, and unscheduled (sick) leave. And typically, small cities can’t possibly attract the best and the brightest with limited funds available for those services.

We are fortunate that the incorporation committee seems to be taking a very comprehensive look at the estimated costs of incorporation. But I hope the committee explores the negative impacts as well.

Small Price To Pay
To the Editor:
I would like to express my concern regarding the controversy over the Moapa Valley T.V. District. I served on the TV Board for many years and know the frustration and concerns in keeping current on the equipment involved in serving the TV needs of the valley.

It seems to me $2.00 per month is a small fee charged for the service provided. I use both the Dish and the local T.V. Service and we probably enjoy the local stations as much as the Dish, especially with KSL available out of Salt Lake City. I really appreciate the work and effort of the Board and want them to know they have my support.

Frog Soup Anyone?
To the Editor:
Something rises up inside me when anyone is being taken advantage of, manipulated or controlled. When I get cornered I protest, I take action. I acknowledge this as an inherited trait, from ancestors who preferred to dump their precious tea into the sea rather than swallow a burdening tax. This TV Tax! To put my home security at stake against a luxury- a luxury our house has unplugged from for many years by conscious choice.

Since when did TV become a necessity? Are we so under the influence of “virtual reality” that we will allow it such power over our resources? Like the frog immersed in comfortably warm water, we seem unaware that the burner is blazing away beneath.

I feel in my bones that this imposed tax is unjust, unfair and unnecessary. It is un-American at its roots. Wake up, wake up Valley people- it’s hotter than we think!

As if the added tax burden isn’t enough- think what it promotes (although there are exceptions). Biased fear generating “news,” sexual promiscuity, vivid violence and blatant dishonesty! Do we have to actually pay hard earned money to allow this influence into our homes, our minds and hearts, and into the lives of our highly absorbent children?

Metro Quick Response
To the Editor:
What I am going to say may seem trivial to some people, but it comforts me to know that my local officers do care about the safety and welfare of my children.

Early Sunday afternoon my daughter was swinging at grandma’s when her younger sister walked behind her…Kevyn fell to the ground screaming.

I had been on the phone with my mother when this happened. I knew Kevyn was o.k., but grandma hung up to attend to her. About 15 minutes later a Metro Officer shows up at the door to respond to a 911 call. Somehow my 20 month old had managed to dial 911 and all the operator could hear was a child screaming. When 911 called back and received no answer, they promptly sent an officer to assess the situation.

While this time it was nothing serious, I am grateful to our 911 system that was able to trace the call and to Metro for their rapid response. I apologize to Metro for the false call, but thank them for caring and doing a wonderful job.

Senior Center Needs Help
To the Editor:
This community has been a haven for a large Senior Citizen population, both fulltime residents and Snowbirds. Through the years, the Overton Senior Center has evolved into a strong support system for seniors in Socialization, Nutrition, Meals on Wheels and transportation to surrounding cities, Las Vegas, Mesquite and St. George, for medical appointments and care. These services have been partially funded by grants. The Senior Center has funded the rest through fundrasing, donations and hard-working volunteers.

Grant funds have been cut by degrees over the past few years, and fuel prices have increased. So, we have seen the continuous rise in our food costs and transportation costs.

At this time the Senior Center faces some tough decisions, and might have to make cuts in the services available for our senior population. Without some significant help from the community, we don’t have a lot of choices.

We need help! We haven’t requested a lot in the past, except from local businesses. But we are seeking some suggestions, help with fundraisers or donations to assist us in being able to continue to support our community of seniors with the services that they need, some of which are on very limited incomes.

If you can help, please contact the Senior Center at 475 S. Moapa Valley Blvd, P.O. Box 2039, Overton, NV 89040. Or call (702) 397-8002.
