New Exhibit To Open At Lost City Museum

Moapa Valley Progress

The Lost City Museum in Overton will be open to the public free admission on Sunday to celebrate International Museum Day. Several new exhibits and attractions will be on display at the museum.

In honor of the month of May being Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month, the Lost City Museum will feature new exhibits, special guest lectures and a showing of an original oil painting by L.A. Ramsey from 1937.

To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the New Deal the exhibit, “From the Footlocker: An Album of Life in the ‘3-C’s” (Civilian Conservation Corps), will feature memorabilia  from Civilian Conservation Corps workers in Southern Nevada. CCC workers left a lasting legacy building the Lost City Museum in 1935 and assisting archaeological excavation. This exhibit, on display through May, was created by Lost City Museum volunteers.

The museum will also show the original oil painting, “Pueblo Grande de Nevada at Sunrise,” loaned to the museum by Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Painted as a part of the WPA arts program by L.A. Ramsey in 1937, the painting hung in the Lost City Museum until the 1950’s. The painting will be on display through the month of May.

May 18 is International Museum Day and admission is free for all events that day. The museum will celebrate the opening of a new exhibit, “Southern Nevada Landscapes of Change.” This exhibit presents the timeline of human history and the changing environment in Southern Nevada, exploring how people use and view their landscape. The exhibit is the outcome of a cooperative effort with the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership Cultural Resource Team (SNAP CRT) and features archaeological projects funded by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) conservation initiative “Preserve America.”

During the May 18 opening, at 2:00 p.m., Dave Conlin of the National Park Service Submerged Resources Team will give a special presentation about the work documenting the B-29 that crashed and sank in Lake Mead in 1948.

Also on May 18, the featured artist for the month Wally Pacholka will visit with guests during the open house. His breathtaking photographs of historic celestial events are framed by scenic southwestern desert landscapes.

On May 24 at 1:00 p.m., Renee Corona Kolvet will give a presentation about the Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern Nevada. Kolvet gathered information from former enrollees for her book, The Civilian Conservation Corps in Nevada, From Boys to Men. Kolvet will autograph copies of her book following the presentation.

The Lost City Museum is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $3.00 for adults 18 to 64; $2.00 for age 65 and above; children and members enter free. For more information, please call the museum at (702) 397-2193.
