The local post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Ladies Auxiliary and the Moapa Valley 4th of July Committee held an annual Memorial Day Candlelight Vigil on Monday, May 26. This annual service in honor of those who have passed away was held at the Pioneer Cemetery.

uniforms and new hats performed the ceremony. “The ceremony was very well done, and the men looked great in their new hats, and the Commander got a new sword this year,” said Jacqulyn Pray of the 4th of July Committee.

The winners of the annual Moapa Valley 4th of July Essay competition were then announced. This year the topic was the same as the celebration’s theme: “Freedom is Never Free.” Pray said that thirty to forty middle school students competed in the Essay Contest this year, and the two winners “really stood out.”

Bryanna Sheldon was awarded $75 for her first place essay, and Autumn Higgins was awarded $25 for second. The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary provided the money for the awards, and were proud to give it to these great young writers.

After the awards the VFW did a memorial presentation including flowers and candles in memory of the soldiers and servicemen who have died in defense of this country.

“I thought that the vigil went well,” said Pray. “It’s important to recognize those who have died so that we can be here today, and that’s why we feel that this vigil is so important.”
