Quiet Please!
To the Editor:
Last week, my husband went to the Moapa Valley Library. While there, three young boys (he said the youngest was probably 11 or 12 and the other two very young teenagers) came into the library. As they came in they were talking loudly in very vulgar language. They sat down at the first computer, which is only about six or seven feet from the check-out counter. They continued to talk, quite loudly, using very vulgar language.

The attendant working at the check-out counter was well within hearing distance of these boys, yet she did not come over even once and ask them to be quiet or even to stop using vulgarity.

Even if this is not against the law (which it certainly should be) what has happened to our society that this happens quite frequently? What has happened to decency and just common courtesy?

I use the Moapa Valley Library frequently and have noticed that while libraries used to be restful places of quiet where you could go to read, look at magazines, or study, but now there is not even a sign that says “Quiet Please.” Quite frequently, there are people in the library with cell phones ringing and talking on their cell phones.

On another subject-I just read this week’s Progress including the apologies from two young men caught smoking marijuana (Public Apologies, June 11, 2008). They apologized but not once did they say they were sorry for breaking the law.

No One Asked Me Either
To the Editor:
‘No one asked me’ either, but I’ve waited far too long to put my ‘stamp’ of approval on the many messages Dr. Moses has written which I, more often than not, have fully agreed with! A very good example would be the excellent article he offered regarding the training of servicemen (No One Asked Me But…: June 4, 2008) . Thanks for pointing out the fact that ‘discipline’ is what soldiers need in training, not ‘reprimand.’ He is right, these men/women are preparing for war, and if not for war then for life!

And yes again, the work should be done by servicemen/women on the bases and not by ‘outsourcing’ (the buzz word I can’t stand because it simply means taking jobs away from people in our country who need them) the jobs away from servicemen who should be expected to use them as part of their training. Heaven knows it worked in a lot of previous wars! Well that’s off my chest.

‘No one asked me’ either, but I can’t thank the VFW enough for the remarkable work they do. The majesty of their salute, their devotion to understanding that our flag is not just a flag!

Our son (a Vietnam war veteran) is buried in St. Thomas cemetery. We were unable to get up to the cemetery early on the Memorial Day weekend and when we got to the cemetery there was a flag flowing in the breeze on our son’s grave. What a treat! I feel sure it was one of you VFW men/women who placed the flag. If you did not then thanks for all the flags you did put in place. If you were the Scout who may have put it up, then thank you for doing so and for pursuing the leadership qualities you are learning through the Scouting program. If it was one of you visiting your loved one and had an extra flag along just in case, thank you. Life deserves far more thanks than we sometimes give. Well that’s off my chest.

‘No one asked me’ either, but we raised our family in a small community (Home, WA that later became Lakebay, WA). It was probably much like Overton must have been at one time. There was a ‘Mom n’ Pop’ grocery store, a Chevron gas station (of sorts) a Post Office (to which we raced when they called and told us our baby chix had arrived from Sears), and a beginning phone company. When our children reached high school it was long distance to call the school which was about five miles away, and which shows you just how small we were.

Like Overton we had our Progress newspaper, but it was named The Gateway. I still pick up an issue whenever we’re in the area, however it’s more like the Review Journal at this point. I can only half imagine what it takes to get a newspaper to print, and you workers at the Progress should know how much your work is appreciated. I eat it up as soon as I return from the Post Office with it. So thank you for your work! Well that’s off my chest.

‘No one asked me’ either, but (lest I forget) who gives Simplot drivers the authority to go through town at ‘break neck speed’? Huh, just who is that person anyhow? Well that’s off my chest, and it’s been on my chest for a very long time.
