VOLUNTEER POWERS

by Chris Green

The treasured “rural atmosphere” of the Moapa Valley is somewhat difficult to explain. It is the feeling of all the social networks around us that cost nothing in actual dollars, but bring tremendous value to residents and visitors alike.

There is a term SOCIAL CAPITAL, and it sounds like it was created from our model. Social capital is the attitude, spirit and willingness of people to engage in collective, civic activities that are to the benefit of all. Whether your family has been here for generations or you just moved in – we all need to invest in sustaining the high level of “Social Capital” that keeps the Moapa Valley a great place to live.

Much has been researched and written regarding Social Capital and its importance in every community wishing to thrive. Social capital creates value for the people who are connected and in turn, the surrounding community as well. Social capital emphasizes not just warm and cuddly feelings, but a wide variety of specific benefits that flow from the trust, reciprocity, information and cooperation associated with social networks.

Building and sustaining the kind of wealth that truly matters is the task every community member should shoulder. Grab a friend, spouse and especially the children of our valley and start small:

Pick it up even if you didn’t drop it; fix it even if you didn’t break it; contribute time or funds to a cause even if you never plan to directly benefit; join a project that includes people from all walks of life; and especially meet everyone with eye contact and a smile.

At this time when we are celebrating America, we need to be aware that our community desperately needs everyone to have the “get involved” mindset that leads to building connections to people that translates to building a wealth of trust between others. The pioneers of this valley understood this notion and relied on each other to build and sustain themselves and this community. I am continually inspired by those I meet that live their life with this concept and thank goodness for the strength and wealth that grows along with the volunteer spirit!
