The College of Southern Nevada in partnership with the Lost City Museum held its Archaeology for Kids class on Monday, July 28. This class is part of the Kids College Program at CSN. It is a personal enrichment course in which students learned aspects of archeology.

CSN Site Coordinator April Krell explains that Kids College was developed to give kids fun and educational activities throughout the summer months. This is the second summer for the program and Krell looks forward to its continuation.

The class went off without a hitch as ten students had the opportunity to learn about the process an Archeologist takes in making discoveries. This class was offered for 3rd through 8th grade age group at a minimal fee. “We are looking forward to having a class for adults as well as younger kids in the future,” said Krell.

These students charted their entire experience just as an Archeologist does on a dig. The kids excavated a mock site during their two hour class. There were buried items which they later dug up. “The only things they didn’t find was an arrowhead they had buried,” explained Krell. They ran into time constraints and had to leave the arrowhead behind. “The two hours went by fast,” said Krell.

Kids were split into two groups during the class, each working a different area of the grid. At the conclusion of the dig the kids were given goodie bags with various items from the gift shop including a Lost City Museum wooden nickle, rocks, a pencil and lizard.

“The kids loved it, they had a blast,” stated Krell. One student came all the way from Las Vegas to attend this class. “When her mom dropped her off she wanted to be a Veterinarian, after the class she said she wanted to be an Archeologist” said Krell.

With this class having such success Krell is excited about getting future classes listed in the large CSN class catalog next year. Right now classes are advertised in the Progress as well as through flyers passed out at school and community functions.

Next up for CSN Kids College is the Study Skills class which takes place over two Saturdays, August 16 and 23. This class is for kids grades 2 through 8. Registration is taking place now. For more information contact April Krell at 398-7545.
