Panel To Share Crop Production Expertise

Published October 1, 2008

A panel of local gardening experts will present information on successful larger-scale crop production on Monday, October 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office located at 1897 North Moapa Valley Boulevard in Logandale.

Dr. Sylvan Wittwer will cover the fundamentals of gardening, including soil preparation, irrigation, plant selection, timing of crops, pest control and fertilization. Local gardener, Laura Bledsoe will share her enthusiasm for the development of a thriving agricultural community in the valley and will discuss successful expansion from the family-size plot. Clivan Bundy, a long-time melon producer, will share the art and science of melon production.

This is the third session led by Bob Morris, Cooperative Extension Area Horticulture Specialist. At the September meeting, the program’s Producer-to-Chef Coordinator, Doug Taylor, told the group that chefs at gourmet restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip are very much interested in buying fresh, local produce to replace items currently purchased from the California markets.

According to Morris, foods are demanding higher prices than traditional foods due to the increased demand for fresh products.

This program is open to all growers in Moapa and Virgin Valleys and surrounding areas. Prospective crop producers are invited to attend the meeting and are encouraged to use the resources available from the Cooperative Extension office to develop a successful program.

Morris is available to help new growers with everything from where to secure seeds to obtaining a business license and certification and how to group together with other growers through a “Cooperative Agreement.” In addition, experienced local producers are needed to serve as advisors and mentors to new producers.

If you would like to grow something to sell, come join in the discussion on October 6. Call UNCE at 397-2604 or 346-7215 to reserve a seat or for more information. Persons in need of special accommodations or assistance must call or notify Pamela Proctor at the UNCE office at least three days prior to the scheduled meeting.
