Oscar Robbins

Oscar Leonard Robbins, age 91, died Thursday, December 28, 2007 at his home in Logandale, Nevada. He was born March 16, 1916 in Paden, Oklahoma to Jacob Homer and Madie Ann Bryant Robbins.

Oscar came to the Moapa Valley area in 1936, arriving by train, he got off near where Simplot loads their train cars. He had heard of the valley through his older brother Ebert who had been here a few times before.

Oscar met and married Rachel Burgess, they were married in St. George, Utah on November 24, 1937. Rachel had a daughter from a previous marriage and Oscar raised her as his own, along with eight of his own children,
Dorothy E. Williams, Roy Homer Robbins, Emma Jean Browning, and Leonard Oscar Robbins, preceded him in death. Son, Jimmie (Rosalie) lives in Logandale, daughter Lorena “Rose” Falin, Mary (D.L. – deceased) Smith live in Overton, a son Paul Eugene Robbins also lives in Overton, Edie (Merlyn) Petty lives in Panaca.

Oscar’s second wife, Mary Geneva Jones Simmons, married on November 10, 1962 in Las Vegas, Nevada and were sealed in the St. George Temple on November 23, 1966. Mary Geneva had five children from a previous marriage; Barbara “Bobbie” Michael of Ivans, UT; Lynn Simmons of Las Vegas, NV; John Simmons of Las Vegas, NV;, Carrol Perry of Ivans, UT and Terry Simmons of Fallon, NV.

Oscars third wife, Darlene Smith, married on March 4, 1994, preceded him in death.

Oscar retired from the I.U.O.E. Local 12 Operating Engineers and received his 50 year service pin in 2004. He was a member of the Local American Legion. After Union retirement, Oscar worked for Jim Moore and built the Robbins Nest trailer court. Oscar, through genealogy research, was a life member of ‘First Families of Twin Territories’ which was founded to recognize, honor, and perpetuate the memory of Early Pioneer and Indian Families who were residents of Oklahoma or Indian Territory on or before the date of statehood, November 16, 1907. As a WWII veteran, he received his training and was en route to Europe as the truce was signed. Oscar was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Logandale 1st Ward.

Surviving are 10 children, 53 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren. Also surviving two sisters; Ama Catherine Hodges of Odessa, Texas and Dorothy (Lloyd) Young of Westville, Oklahoma.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Logandale LDS 1st Ward Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday, January 5, 2008 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Logandale Cemetery under the direction of Moapa Valley Mortuary, (702) 398-3600.
