The small school with a big heart seems to always have something fun and educational taking place outside of classroom education. Perkins Elementary Music/Art Teacher Vince Dasal has recently started up a Ballroom Dancing group for Perkins students.

Approximately 30 students signed up to participate. They practice three mornings a week before school. Dasal has been successful in recruiting an impressive number of boys, only leaving a few girls with the need to dance with each other.

Perkins Elementary students learn Ballroom Dancing at the direction of Music/Art Teacher Mr. Vince Dasal. The kids practice before school three days a week.
Dasal is teaching the students the Rumba which is said to be one of the most popular ballroom dances; the Waltz; and the East Coast Swing. The group has only met six times thus far. In that short time the students have learned many of the basic steps as well as combinations that take them through each dance.

Dasal is focusing on basic steps right now and will be focusing more on expression later on. Right now the students are reminded to pay attention to the posture while they learn the steps.

The students seem eager to learn and seem to take their lessons seriously. “This is fun and hard!” commented one student.

Dasal taught Ballroom Dance in Virgin Valley prior to joining the teaching staff at Perkins Elementary. Dasal explained that there was a dance class and a dance troop. The troop would travel to other schools and perform their talents. Dasal expressed a desire to take his Perkins students on the road to tour other schools once their skill level is up to par.

Since his arrival at Perkins, Dasal says he has been striving to enrich the children’s lives in an artistic fashion. “I just want to give the kids a few life long skills” he said.
