Basketball- With last week’s release of the All-State basketball team, guard Shaun Hilton could only remember images from the season. For Hilton, the images of his play were images of the Nevada 3A State MVP, as the coaches in the 3A voted Shaun Hilton as the Most Valuable Player in Nevada during Moapa Valley’s run to the State Championship game.

“I would have definitely taken the (state) win over any individual award,” Hilton said.

In the beginning of the season, Hilton was the team’s point guard, but a mid-season switch to being a post player catapulted the Pirates to a Division Championship this season, their first since 2004.

“He was just one of those players who handled the ball well enough to be our point guard, but his height made him a problem to post up,” coach Dallas Larsen said.

Moapa Valley guard Max Jenkins was also named to the first-team list, as Jenkins averaged 17.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists as Moapa Valley’s leading scorer this season.

On the girl’s side, Caley Dunlap was named as a first-team All-State guard. Dunlap, a junior, was one of the leading catalysts for Moapa Valley’s breakthrough return to prominence. Dunlap also complimented her sharp rebounding skills with a respectable outside-shooting ability, as she led Moapa Valley in 3-point makes this season.

Golf- Moapa Valley’s Boy’s golf team has turned their season around the last two weeks, taking 2nd at both the Palms and Boulder City Municipal Tournaments.

At Boulder City Municipal last Wednesday, Moapa Valley shot a 442, beating third place Boulder City by 18 strokes. The Pirates were led by Travis Causey’s 84 and Jon Oglesby’s 86.

The round of the tournament was shot by senior Andrew Anderson, who carded an 87, his lowest round in a varsity tournament. Anderson, who shot 47 on the front nine, shot 40 on the back nine to help Moapa Valley.

Swimming- Moapa Valley competed last Saturday against Rancho High School.

While losing the meet 160-66, the Pirates were able to take some high places. Moapa Valley won the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. William Sheldon also won the 100 meter breaststroke.

The Lady Pirates lost their meet 186-36.
