Approximately 130 eager eighth graders from W. Mack Lyon Middle School loaded two buses and set off to the Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) on March 31. Once arriving they were corralled into the Ron Dalley Theatre and were the first to observe “On a Dark and Stormy Night” performed by MVHS Drama Club. The play was a fun horror comedy keeping the audience on the edge of its seat.

As the play concluded MVHS Principal Grant Hanevold had a slide show prepared by Ms. Kim Hardy about some electives being offered and the required courses for 9th grade.

Ashley Diamond, MVHS FFA Student teaches Mack Lyon 8th graders about the Ag Farm during the 8th grade field trip to Moapa Valley High School on Tuesday, March 31.
When the slide show finished the students were treated to a funny movie. The director and star was none other than MVHS senior Ben Paul. Paul’s movie offered good advice for electives and showed some items made or taught in the classes. “Ben Paul’s movie was one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen” said Mack Lyon student Cody Johnson.

Then 8th graders made a visit to the Ag Farm to learn about the Future Farmers of America (FFA). The kids were given tours. The first station was lunch which consisted of hot dogs, chips, soda, and water which were provided by MVHS and prepared by the Moapa Valley Rotary Club. Station two consisted of a group of kids from the high school CADD class. They taught about the skills they have acquired in this class, which was building some of the buildings at the farm, laying out the concrete, and designing. They referred to themselves as the go-to-guys and girls. Station three was a tour of the soon to be classroom now known as the Hay House. Station four was a tour of the inside hydroponics greenhouse. President of FFA Alyssa O’Toole taught about how it worked and that it was the fastest way to grow vegetables. She also explained that the lettuce you get at restaurants throughout Logandale and Overton is mostly grown in this greenhouse. Finally, station five was a tour of the netted greenhouse and the livestock. FFA member William Sheldon, Orey Woods, and Ashley Diamond showed students how to plant the plants and feed the livestock. Sheldon explained most of the livestock was for show except for the chickens which they use to collect eggs.

When it was time to head back to Mack Lyon happy and tired students boarded the buses and rode back to school. The trip to MVHS has many students excited about heading to high school next year and interested in joining the classes they learned about during their trip.
