The Calvary Community Church held its annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) last week. The VBS was open free of charge to kids aged preschool through 5th grade. About 50 kids were in attendance this year to enjoy their very first “game show” experience.

The ‘Studio Go Game Show’ came to town to allow children to explore the Bible through a variety of exciting

activities. Children were divided into groups by age.

Plenty of adult leaders were on hand to guide the children through their adventure along with a large number of teen volunteers. “This is the largest group of volunteers we have had at Vacation Bible School,” explained Leader Susie Fisk.

Each room was decorated in bright colors with plenty of that Hollywood glitz and glamour that one would expect for a game show theme. The main stage had been transformed into the game show stage which was the gathering place at the beginning and end of each day.

Upon arrival the eager children gathered to learn what was in store for them. Kids were invited to donate spare change into jars each day to work towards an end of the week pool party. These donations brought on a healthy competition between boys and girls as they attempted to outdo each other and raise more donations than their rivals.

Once the groups broke from the Studio Go opening ceremonies they rotated through sessions. Kids participated in the Service Showcase which consisted of service projects such as washing cars, making treats, participating in a clothes drive and writing thank you letters to local community leaders.

Another station was Primetime where kids participated in interactive bible stories. Spotlight Creations focused on crafts where kids made a variety of fun items throughout the week. The groups also enjoyed the Food & Fun station where they shared snacks and played games appropriate for their age groups.

The preschoolers enjoyed their Primetime with leader Nancy Postma who used a dog puppet named Cooper to tell the stories. Postma used fun voices and big gestures to ensure the little ones had the time of their lives. After the story a large parachute was brought out and the kids each enjoyed their own turn under the parachute as the others lifted it up and down over their heads. Other fun games like Duck, Duck, Goose were played to entertain the little ones.

At the end of each day the groups all gathered back at the Studio Go stage where the daily messages were discussed, messages such as “Go Lead”, “Go Tell”, “Go Risk”, and “Go Obey”. Game Show Host Marc Jobst then took the stage and introduced his two expert contestants, Coach Armstrong played by Jason Abbott and Professor Wordsmart played by Beverly Bradly. A kid contestant also joined the competition each day. The contestants were to answer questions regarding the days bible stories in order to earn enough points to be named the winner. Of course the kid contestants were sharp and couldn’t be beat.
