“Our families have been friends for over 15 years,” Carrie Beckstrand said of the Montandons. “We respect what Mike did as (North Las Vegas) Mayor, and we believe he will be a great governor.”
Montandon was the mayor of North Las Vegas from 1997 until this year. During his time as mayor, North Las Vegas became the fastest growing city in the United States. Montandon has the distinction of being elected the first Republican mayor in a city that is predominately Democrat. Montandon has strong opinions on what government should and should not do. He believes in the law of supply and demand, and believes that no company is “too big to fail.” Montandon’s views on Yucca Mountain are contrary to that of the mainstream elected Nevada leadership. He believes that the state could have a potential gold mine in the Yucca Mountain site. Montandan believes that the state should be developing Yucca Mountain, not as a repository for nuclear waste, but as a recycling center. He anticipates that the state could generate revenue not only from other states sending nuclear waste here, but also by those states purchasing the recycled product. Montandon is also an advocate of 100% Empowerment schools. He believes that school districts in the state would be able to do more with available money if a supply and demand system created by 100% empowerment schools were in place. On a national level, Montandon believes that each state should be competitive within the country, not cookie-cutter states that are clones of one another. “Nevada needs someone to step up and lead in this time of fiscal crisis,” Montandon said. He believes that can be achieved by creating a vision plan for the state, a map for current and future spending. There are two other declared Republican candidates running for the Governor seat: Jim Gibbons, incumbent Governor, and Jim Heck, state Senator from Henderson.
