Students were rewarded for a number of factors such as being prepared for class with planners, having good attendance, and showing school spirit. The purpose of the program was to improve overall behavior and academics.
Students were motivated to earn points in each category in order to participate in quarterly field trips. At the end of each quarter, students who had accumulated enough points qualified for a Pride Trip. The first Pride Trip, in the fall, was lunch and bowling in Mesquite. A second trip, an afternoon at the movies, took place in the spring. But the grand prize at year’s end was a trip to Disneyland. Even though this was the first year students have gone to Disneyland as a school, Assistant Principal Jaydel Wilson said that the trip went off without a hitch. “We were right on time with everything,” he said. “It was smooth; we had no problems.” Surprisingly, the parks were not crowded on a Friday. “We might go during a different month next year,” said Wilson. “But we’ll definitely plan on going again.” Student response to the Pride Trip incentive has been positive this year with noticeable improvements in student performance and attendance, Wilson said.
