In a recent editorial (Good Advice Is Only Good If You Follow It: Progress, August 18, 2010), the Progress characterizes the reasons for the MVTAB not recommending the straw poll vote as being “probably justified”, and then at the end as being “misguided”.
In the face of political reality the characterization that the MVTAB was misguided just does not apply here. Of course we should continue our voice as a community and we should be heard, respected, and heeded, and also what we say should be of importance.
The straw poll vote should also be honored, but the reality is that it is not. To recommend that we persist in continuing with “that inconvenient nagging voice” in an effort to remind the commissioners of our outrage or to restore their honoring the straw poll vote serves no productive purpose and would accomplish nothing at this point in time. State law and not tradition gives power to our County Commissioners to appoint Town Advisory Board Members if they so choose, with or without a straw poll vote.
There are perhaps things that can be done which might make a difference such as changing State Law, incorporating our communities, or electing new commissioners.
Serving on the MVTAB can also make a difference. Presently, the commissioners are taking applications for candidates who are interested in serving during the next two-year period beginning in January 2011. In conclusion, if there are some in the community who would still like to conduct the traditional straw poll vote, then please feel free to do so.— The law permits such polling.
