The Library Angels organization held its annual book sale located at the Moapa Valley Library on Saturday, October 23.
Since 2006, the Library Angels have been hosting the sale to benefit the children’s activities at the local library. Book prices at the sale were so reasonable that the Library Angels knew they would have to provide plastic bags and boxes. Most patrons started out with a plastic bag and either filled it to capacity or had to trade it in for a box. Hard back books were a mere fifty cents while kids books cost only ten cents.
This year the Library Angels served around 500 buyers and provided about 5,000 books for purchase. Not only books were on sale but movies on DVD and VHS, music and books on tape.
Jo Tame, Nan Thompson, Colleen Webb, Bonnie Coopman, and Jackie Worthen are the original angels who began the tradition five years ago. They saw the need for fundraising to help pay for kids programs. They figured there was no a better way to raise money than a book sale.
This years sale has been the largest yet. “Every year it keeps getting bigger and bigger!” said Tame.
The group plans to continue the annual tradition but are seeking some help. “Although we function well with just the five of us, we are looking for a place to store more books during the next year,” said Tame.
Last year they had to ask people to stop donating books, mainly due to the storage space issue. Currently they store the books in one of the Library Angels garage.
Once the sale ends, the Angels hand over all proceeds from the sale to the library for children’s programs.
